Hi, I’m Diane Brown, founder of The Music Room Ayrshire, alongside my husband Stuart.
Master Rhythm & Melody Together
I started learning the trombone at age 9, and what began as a simple school lesson quickly became something that shaped my entire life. My teachers weren’t just teaching music—they built my confidence, encouraged me through challenges, and became role= models I looked up to.
They inspired me to go on to study music at the University of Aberdeen—and ultimately to create The Music Room.
Our mission is simple:
To give every young person the chance to experience music lessons that don’t just teach skills—but build confidence, resilience, and a love of learning that lasts.
Your lessons are shaped around your musical ambitions from day one.

Why Parents Choose Us
Music That Builds More Than Skill
We don’t just teach notes—we help young people grow in confidence, resilience, and self-belief.
Because the right music lessons don’t just fill time… they shape futures.
Every Child’s Potential Matters
Not every child learns the same way—and that’s exactly why we personalise our approach.
Whether your child is shy, energetic, struggling with confidence, or full of potential, we create a space where they feel supported, motivated, and proud of their progress.
Lessons They’ll Never Want to Quit
We believe music lessons should be the highlight of your child’s week—not something they dread.
Our students enjoy coming to lessons, connecting with inspiring teachers, and developing a lifelong love of music.
FAQs
What age is good to start learning bass?
We recommend ages 7-8 for most students due to the size and weight of bass guitars. We suggest smaller scale basses for young or smaller students. Our bass instructors evaluate each student during their free trial lesson and can suggest any adjustments needed.
Do I need a bass guitar to take lessons?
No, you do not need a bass initially, however we suggest getting one within the first 5 weeks. This will enable you to practise at home and bring to your lessons making progress faster. We can guide you to the right instrument– And we recommend checking Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for affordable options before buying new.
What type of bass should I buy?
We recommend Fender Precision basses (P-bass) the range starts at Squire models for an affordable option. For children or smaller adults, get a smaller scale bass to ensure proper technique and comfort.
How is bass different from guitar?
Bass focuses on rhythm and low-frequency foundation, requiring both rhythmic precision (like drums) and melodic understanding (scales and harmony). You have less strings but much more responsibility for the song’s foundation.
How much should I practice?
Every day you should be doing at least 10 minutes of practise. Most of all, consistency and frequency matter more than duration to build up that
muscle memory in the fingers.
